Bulbuls are fascinating members of the family Pycnonotidae, which encompasses a diverse group of medium-sized passerine songbirds. This family includes not only bulbuls but also greenbuls, brownbuls, leafloves, and bristlebills, showcasing a rich variety of avian life.

Geographically, bulbuls are widely distributed, inhabiting regions across most of Africa and extending into the Middle East, tropical Asia, and Indonesia. Their range even reaches as far north as Japan, with several insular species found on the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean.

With a total of one hundred sixty-six species classified into thirty-two genera, bulbuls exhibit remarkable adaptability to different environments. While African species predominantly thrive in rainforest habitats, their Asian counterparts are more commonly found in open areas, highlighting the ecological diversity within this family of birds.
