Burry Stander

Burry Stander, born on September sixteenth, nineteen eighty-seven, was a prominent South African mountain biker known for his exceptional talent and competitive spirit. He made a significant mark in the cycling world by becoming the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men's cross-country champion in two thousand nine. Stander's prowess was evident on the international stage, where he represented South Africa in the Summer Olympics, finishing fifteenth in Beijing in two thousand eight and achieving a remarkable fifth place in London in two thousand twelve.

In addition to his Olympic appearances, Stander formed a formidable partnership with Christoph Sauser in two thousand nine for the prestigious Absa Cape Epic. Their journey began with a sixth-place finish that year, but they quickly improved, securing second place in two thousand ten. The duo's hard work culminated in a historic victory in two thousand eleven, making Stander the first South African to win the Absa Cape Epic. The following year, they continued their success by winning the Prologue and four out of seven stages of the marathon stage race.

Tragically, Burry Stander's life was cut short on January third, two thousand thirteen, when he was struck by a taxibus while returning from a training ride to his Concept Cyclery Shop in South Africa. The incident led to the conviction of the KwaZulu-Natal minibus taxi driver for culpable homicide on April seventeenth, two thousand fifteen, resulting in a three-year prison sentence. Stander's legacy lives on, inspiring future generations of cyclists.
