C. Donald Bateman

Charles Donald Bateman, known as Don Bateman, was born on March 8, 1932, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He pursued his passion for engineering, earning a degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1956. This academic foundation set the stage for a remarkable career in aviation safety technology.

Bateman began his professional journey at Sundstrand Corporation, which later became part of Honeywell. Throughout his tenure, he held the position of Chief Engineer for Flight Safety Avionics, where he dedicated himself to developing innovative and cost-effective avionic flight systems. His most notable achievement was the invention of the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) in the late 1960s, a groundbreaking technology that significantly reduced the incidence of controlled flight into terrain accidents.

The impact of Bateman's work is profound; the GPWS is now a mandatory requirement for turbine aircraft carrying nine or more passengers, and it has been credited with saving countless lives in the aviation industry. His contributions have generated nearly one billion dollars in revenue for Honeywell, underscoring the importance of his innovations in enhancing flight safety.

After a distinguished career, Bateman retired from Honeywell on July 21, 2016. He passed away on May 21, 2023, at the age of ninety-one, leaving behind a legacy that is celebrated within the aviation community.
