C. Henry Gordon

C. Henry Gordon, born Henry Racke on June 17, 1883, in New York City, was a prominent American actor known for his work on both stage and screen. His early education took him across the globe, with studies in Switzerland and Germany. Before embracing the world of acting, Gordon ventured into the mining industry, owning a silver mine in New Mexico. However, after facing challenges in this endeavor, he found his true calling in the performing arts.

Gordon's entry into acting was serendipitous; he accompanied his sister to an audition and was invited to read for a role, quickly becoming a valued member of the troupe. His extensive stage career spanned both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, with notable performances in plays such as The Shanghai Gesture (1928) and The Drums of Jeopardy (1922). He also spent six summers performing at the Elitch Theatre from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen twenty-nine.

Transitioning to film, Gordon made his debut in 1911 alongside George Beban in New York. Over the next decade, he appeared in more than seventy films, often portraying complex villainous characters. His roles frequently included depictions of people of color, such as Surat Khan in The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936) and the Chinese smuggler Sam Kee in Lazy River (1934).

Sadly, C. Henry Gordon's life came to an end on December 3, 1940, at Hollywood Hospital in Los Angeles, California, following a leg amputation due to a blood clot. His contributions to the arts, both on stage and in film, remain a testament to his talent and versatility as an actor.
