C. N. Annadurai

Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai, affectionately known as Perarignar Anna, was a prominent Indian politician and the visionary founder of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Born on September fifteenth, nineteen oh nine, he emerged from a middle-class background and initially worked as a school teacher before transitioning into journalism. His political journey began as he edited various political journals and became an active member of the Dravidar Kazhagam, where he was influenced by the ideologies of Periyar.

Annadurai's political career took a significant turn when ideological differences with Periyar led him to establish the DMK. His party initially mirrored the principles of its predecessor but evolved over time, especially after the Sino-Indian War in nineteen sixty-two, when he abandoned the demand for an independent Dravida Nadu. His adept use of Tamil cinema for political messaging set him apart, making him a trailblazer in the realm of political propaganda.

In nineteen sixty-seven, Annadurai's leadership culminated in a historic victory for the DMK in the state elections, marking a pivotal moment in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. As the fourth and last chief minister of Madras State and the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu, he implemented progressive policies such as legalizing Self-Respect marriages and enforcing a two-language policy. His cabinet was notably the youngest in India at that time, reflecting his commitment to youth empowerment.

Tragically, Annadurai's tenure was cut short when he succumbed to cancer on February third, nineteen sixty-nine, just two years into his term. His funeral witnessed an unprecedented turnout, underscoring his profound impact on the people of Tamil Nadu. Today, numerous institutions and organizations honor his legacy, including a splinter party founded by M. G. Ramachandran in nineteen seventy-two, named All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
