Cædwalla

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Cædwalla

Cædwalla, born in six hundred fifty-nine, was a notable monarch who ruled Wessex from approximately six hundred eighty-five until his abdication in six hundred eighty-eight. His name, derived from the Welsh Cadwallon, reflects a lineage steeped in historical significance. Exiled from Wessex during his youth, Cædwalla gathered forces and launched an attack against the South Saxons, resulting in the death of their king, Æthelwealh, in what is now Sussex. Despite this initial success, he was unable to maintain control over the territory and was subsequently driven out by Æthelwealh's ealdormen.

In either six hundred eighty-five or six hundred eighty-six, Cædwalla ascended to the throne of Wessex. His reign marked a pivotal moment in the region's history, as he may have played a crucial role in suppressing rival dynasties, with early sources indicating that Wessex was previously ruled by underkings until his rise. Following his accession, he returned to Sussex, successfully reclaiming the territory and expanding his influence by conquering the Isle of Wight, gaining control over Surrey, and asserting dominance over the kingdom of Kent. In six hundred eighty-six, he appointed his brother Mul as king of Kent, although Mul met a tragic end in a revolt a year later, prompting Cædwalla to possibly rule Kent directly.

During the conquest of the Isle of Wight, Cædwalla sustained injuries, which may have influenced his decision to abdicate in six hundred eighty-eight. He embarked on a journey to Rome for baptism, reaching the city in April six hundred eighty-nine. There, he was baptized by Pope Sergius I on the Saturday before Easter. Tragically, Cædwalla passed away just ten days later, on April twentieth, six hundred eighty-nine, leaving behind a legacy that would be succeeded by Ine.
