Călin Georgescu, born on March 26, 1962, is a prominent Romanian agronomist and politician known for his extensive work in sustainable development. He served as the President of the European Research Centre for the Club of Rome from 2013 to 2015, where he focused on innovative solutions to global challenges.
In the 2024 Romanian presidential election, Georgescu ran as an independent candidate, advocating views that have been characterized as pro-Russian, anti-NATO, and far-right. His political stance has led to descriptions of him as a right-wing populist, ultranationalist, and conspiracy theorist, with a notable emphasis on anti-capitalism. Initially polling at approximately five percent, his support surged during the campaign, ultimately securing twenty-three percent of the vote and finishing first in the initial round.
However, his campaign faced significant controversy when Romanian security services alleged the use of over one million euros in undeclared funds and reported cyber-attacks on the election infrastructure, believed to be from a state actor. As a result, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the first round's results on December 6.
On February 26, 2025, Georgescu was detained by police and charged with several offenses, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order. Following this, authorities imposed a sixty-day ban on his media appearances. Despite these challenges, he filed his candidacy for the 2025 Romanian presidential election but was barred from running by the Central Electoral Bureau on March 9, even as he led in public opinion polls. Ultimately, Nicușor Dan was elected president.
