Callicrates

Callicrates was a prominent ancient Greek architect, renowned for his contributions during the middle of the fifth century BC. He is best known for his collaboration with Ictinus in the design and construction of the Parthenon, a masterpiece of classical architecture that stands as a symbol of ancient Athens.

In addition to the Parthenon, Callicrates is credited with the architectural design of the Temple of Nike, located on the Acropolis of Athens. An inscription confirms his role in this project, which may refer to either the existing amphiprostyle Temple of Athena Nike or an earlier naiskos whose remnants were discovered within the later temple's foundations.

Callicrates' expertise extended beyond religious structures; he was also involved in the construction of the Classical circuit wall of the Acropolis, as noted in another inscription. Furthermore, Plutarch records that he was commissioned to build a defensive wall connecting Athens to Piraeus, showcasing his significant role in the city's fortifications.

His legacy is so enduring that a crater on the planet Mercury has been named in his honor, a testament to the lasting impact of his architectural achievements.
