Calvin B. Fowler, born on February 11, 1940, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was a distinguished basketball player who left an indelible mark on the sport. He graduated from David B. Oliver High School in June 1957, where he showcased his exceptional talent by scoring sixty-one points in a remarkable game against Allegheny Vocational in January 1958. This performance was a testament to his skill, as he scored twenty-two points in the first half and exploded for thirty-nine in the final two quarters.
Fowler continued to hone his craft at Saint Francis University, graduating in 1962. His basketball journey took him to the Akron Wingfoots in the early 1960s, where he earned recognition as an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) All-America in both nineteen sixty-seven and nineteen sixty-eight. His prowess on the court led him to co-captain the U.S. gold medal team at the 1968 Summer Olympics, following his role as captain of the United States gold medal basketball team at the 1967 Pan American Games.
In addition to his international achievements, Fowler played in the American Basketball Association for the Carolina Cougars during the nineteen sixty-nine to seventy season. Over the course of his career, he represented the United States in eighteen games, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.
Calvin Fowler passed away on March 5, 2013, and is laid to rest in the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland. His contributions to basketball and his leadership on the court continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
