Camillo Berneri

Camillo Berneri, born on May twentieth, nineteen ninety-seven in Lodi, Italy, emerged as a prominent figure in the anarchist and anti-fascist movements. Initially joining the Italian Socialist Party, he soon grew disillusioned with its lack of militancy and its failure to confront Italian imperialism. This discontent led him to embrace anarchism and become an active member of the Italian Syndicalist Union (USI). His early career as a schoolteacher was cut short when he was forced into exile following the rise of the Fascist dictatorship in Italy.

During his time in exile, Berneri became a leading voice among Italian anarchists, drawing the attention of both fascist spies and the French police. Between nineteen twenty-eight and nineteen thirty-one, he faced multiple arrests and imprisonments across various Western European countries, each lacking a legal framework for his expulsion. After receiving a pardon, he re-engaged with the Italian anti-fascist movement, fostering alliances between anarchists and the liberal socialists of Giustizia e Libertà (GL).
