Candas Jane Dorsey, born on November sixteenth, nineteen fifty-two, is a distinguished Canadian writer and science fiction novelist, proudly residing in her hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. From an early age, Dorsey embraced her passion for writing, skillfully navigating across various genres. Her impressive body of work includes poetry, fiction—both mainstream and speculative—along with short and long-form narratives, arts journalism, and advocacy.
In addition to her literary pursuits, Dorsey has made significant contributions to television and stage scripts, magazine and newspaper articles, and reviews. Her commitment to the literary community is evident through her teaching, workshops, and readings, where she inspires aspiring writers and engages with audiences.
Dorsey has played a vital role in the Writers Guild of Alberta, serving on its executive board, and is a founding member of SF Canada, an organization dedicated to promoting Canadian speculative fiction. Her editorial expertise was showcased during her tenure as editor-in-chief of The Books Collective, which included River, Slipstream, and Tesseract Books, from nineteen ninety-two to two thousand five.
In recognition of her contributions to the field, Dorsey was honored with the Aurora Award in nineteen ninety-eight. Furthermore, in nineteen ninety-four, she co-edited a special issue of Prairie Fire magazine, alongside G.N. Louise Jonasson, that highlighted the richness of Canadian speculative fiction.
