Carl Andre

However, Andre's life has not been without controversy. In nineteen eighty-five, his third wife, the contemporary artist Ana Mendieta, tragically fell from their thirty-fourth-floor apartment window, leading to a highly publicized trial. Despite being acquitted of a second-degree murder charge in a bench trial in nineteen eighty-eight, the incident sparked outrage among feminists in the art community, with many supporters of Mendieta protesting at Andre's exhibitions in the years that followed.
