Carl Millöcker

Millöcker's journey into composition began while he held various conducting positions in Vienna. His first operetta, 'Der tote Gast,' premiered in eighteen sixty-five, showcasing his talent for creating engaging musical narratives. The libretto, crafted by Ludwig Harisch, was inspired by a novel by Heinrich Zschokke, marking the beginning of Millöcker's contributions to the operetta genre.

His most notable work, 'Der Bettelstudent,' achieved international acclaim, allowing him to retire from conducting and focus solely on composition. Despite this success, Millöcker struggled to replicate the same level of popularity in his subsequent works.
