Carles Puigdemont

He has been at the forefront of Catalan politics, serving as the President of Together for Catalonia (Junts) since two thousand twenty-four, a position he previously held from two thousand twenty to two thousand twenty-two. His political journey includes a significant tenure as the 130th President of the Government of Catalonia from two thousand sixteen to two thousand seventeen, during which he oversaw a controversial independence referendum that led to his removal from office.

Puigdemont's early career began in journalism after completing his education in Amer and Girona. He started writing for various local publications in nineteen eighty and eventually became the editor-in-chief of El Punt. His leadership roles included directing the Catalan News Agency from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand two and overseeing Girona's House of Culture from two thousand two to two thousand four. His political involvement began in his teenage years, joining the nationalist Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) in nineteen eighty, which laid the foundation for his future political endeavors.

In two thousand six, Puigdemont transitioned from journalism to politics, being elected as a member of the Parliament of Catalonia for the Girona constituency.
