Carlo Emery

Carlo Emery, born on October twenty-fifth, eighteen forty-eight, was a distinguished Italian entomologist and university educator. He is best known for formulating Emery's rule, which highlights the close relationship between insect social parasites and their hosts.

Initially, Emery embarked on a path in general medicine, later shifting his focus to ophthalmology in eighteen seventy-two. By eighteen seventy-eight, he had transitioned to academia, taking on the role of Professor of Zoology at the University of Cagliari. This position marked the beginning of a long and impactful career in zoology, which continued at the University of Bologna from eighteen eighty-one until his passing in nineteen twenty-five.

Emery's research primarily concentrated on Hymenoptera, although his early studies included Coleoptera. His scholarly contributions spanned from eighteen sixty-nine to nineteen twenty-six, during which he described one hundred thirty genera and one thousand fifty-seven species, predominantly featured in Wytsman's Genera Insectorum series.

His extensive collections of Hymenoptera are housed in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale Giacomo Doria in Genoa, while his Coleoptera specimens are preserved in Rome's Museo Civico di Zoologia. Carlo Emery's legacy endures through his significant contributions to entomology, particularly in the study of ants.
