Carlo Maria Martini

Carlo Maria Martini, born on February fifteenth, nineteen twenty-seven, was a distinguished Italian Jesuit and biblical scholar. His remarkable journey in the Catholic Church saw him serve as the Archbishop of Milan from nineteen eighty to two thousand two, during which he became a prominent figure in theological discourse.

Martini entered the Society of Jesus in nineteen forty-four and was ordained as a priest in nineteen fifty-two. His intellectual prowess and liberal views positioned him as a significant contender for the papacy during the two thousand five conclave, following the passing of Pope John Paul II. Notably, he garnered more votes than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in the initial round, although Ratzinger ultimately secured the papacy.

In two thousand two, Martini retired due to health issues, specifically a rare form of Parkinson's disease, and relocated to the Pontifical Institute in Jerusalem. He continued to contribute to theological scholarship until his passing at the Jesuit Aloisianum College in Gallarate, near Milan, eight years later.
