Carme Forcadell

Carme Forcadell, born on May twenty-ninth, nineteen fifty-five, is a prominent Spanish politician hailing from Catalonia. She has made significant contributions as a secondary school teacher, cultural activist, writer, adviser, and linguist, with a strong focus on Catalan independence.

Forcadell was instrumental in founding Plataforma per la Llengua and served on the executive board of the Sabadell branch of Òmnium Cultural. Her leadership as president of the Catalan National Assembly spanned from its inception until May two thousand fifteen, marking her as a key figure in the Catalan independence movement.

In two thousand fifteen, she secured a seat in the Catalan parliament as part of the Junts pel Sí coalition. Her election as President of the Parliament of Catalonia in October of the same year was a pivotal moment in her career, a role she maintained until January two thousand eighteen.

However, her political journey took a tumultuous turn when she was imprisoned from March two thousand eighteen to June two thousand twenty-one, facing accusations of rebellion. In October two thousand nineteen, Spain's Supreme Court sentenced her to eleven years and six months in prison for sedition and embezzlement of public funds. Following a government pardon, she was released in June two thousand twenty-one.
