Carmel Busuttil, born on February 29, 1964, is a celebrated Maltese former professional footballer and coach, widely regarded as one of the finest players in Malta's football history. Known affectionately as 'Il-Bużu', he began his illustrious career with his hometown club, Rabat Ajax, where he achieved remarkable success, securing two Premier League titles, two Super Cups, and an FA Trophy.
After a year in Italy with Verbania, Busuttil made a significant move to Belgium in 1988, joining Genk. There, he became a pivotal figure, serving as club captain and finishing as the team's top scorer for three consecutive seasons. His return to Malta saw him join Sliema Wanderers, where he added another Premier League title to his impressive collection. By the time he retired in 2001, he had etched his name in history as one of the highest goalscorers in the Premier League, netting a total of ninety-three goals.
On the international stage, Busuttil made his debut for the Maltese national team in 1982. Over the course of his career, he earned one hundred and thirteen caps and scored twenty-three goals, making him the fourth-most capped player in the nation's history. His record as the top goalscorer stood until it was surpassed in March 2010. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to Maltese football, he was honored by the Malta Football Association in 2004 as the country's 'single most outstanding player' over the past fifty years during the UEFA Jubilee Awards.
