Carol Hanisch

Carol Hanisch, born in nineteen forty-two, is a prominent American journalist and women's rights activist known for her radical feminist views. As a key member of the New York Radical Women and the Redstockings, she played a significant role in the feminist movement during the late twentieth century.

One of her most notable contributions to feminist discourse is the phrase 'the personal is political,' which she popularized in a 1970 essay of the same name. However, Hanisch clarifies in her 2006 updated essay that she did not originally title it, attributing the title to the editors of 'Notes from the Second Year: Women's Liberation,' Shulamith Firestone and Anne Koedt.

In addition to her literary contributions, Hanisch was instrumental in organizing the 1968 Miss America protest. She was among the four women who famously hung a women's liberation banner over the balcony at the Miss America Pageant, effectively disrupting the proceedings and drawing attention to the issues faced by women.
