Carol Moseley Braun

Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun, born on August 16, 1947, is a distinguished American diplomat, politician, and lawyer. She made history as the first African-American woman elected to the United States Senate, representing Illinois from 1993 to 1999. Her groundbreaking election marked a significant milestone, as she was also the first African-American U.S. senator from the Democratic Party and the first female U.S. senator from Illinois.

Before her tenure in the Senate, Moseley Braun served in the Illinois House of Representatives from nineteen seventy-nine to nineteen eighty-eight and held the position of Cook County Recorder of Deeds from nineteen eighty-eight to nineteen ninety-two. In nineteen ninety-two, she achieved a remarkable victory in the Democratic primary, defeating incumbent Senator Alan J. Dixon, which led to her election to the Senate.

After serving one term, she was defeated by Republican Peter Fitzgerald in nineteen ninety-eight. Following her Senate career, she was appointed as the United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, serving from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one. In two thousand four, she sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential election but withdrew before the Iowa caucuses.

In November two thousand ten, Moseley Braun launched a campaign for mayor of Chicago, aiming to succeed retiring incumbent Richard M. Daley. She finished fourth in a competitive field of six candidates, ultimately losing the election to Rahm Emanuel. Most recently, in January twenty twenty-three, she was nominated by President Joe Biden to chair the board of directors for the United States African Development Foundation, beginning her tenure in April twenty twenty-four.
