Caroline Herschel

Caroline Herschel, born on March sixteenth, seventeen fifty, was a pioneering German astronomer whose remarkable contributions to the field of astronomy are still celebrated today. Among her most notable achievements is the discovery of several comets, including the periodic comet 35P/Herschel–Rigollet, which proudly bears her name. Throughout her career, she collaborated closely with her elder brother, William Herschel, also an esteemed astronomer.

As the first known professional female astronomer, Caroline broke significant barriers in a male-dominated field. She was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist and the first female in England to hold a government position. Her groundbreaking work led her to become the first woman to publish scientific findings in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

Caroline's accolades continued to grow throughout her life. In eighteen twenty-eight, she was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and in eighteen thirty-five, she was named an honorary member of the same society alongside Mary Somerville. Her contributions were further recognized when she became an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy in eighteen thirty-eight.

On the occasion of her ninety-sixth birthday in eighteen forty-six, the King of Prussia honored her with a gold medal for her outstanding achievements in science, a testament to her enduring legacy in the world of astronomy.
