As the youngest and posthumous daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, she was raised in a sheltered environment, far removed from the royal court's intrigues.

At the tender age of fifteen, Caroline Matilda married her first cousin, King Christian VII, who struggled with mental illness and remained emotionally distant throughout their marriage. Despite these challenges, she bore two children: the future King Frederick VI and Louise Augusta, whose paternity has been speculated to involve the German physician Johann Friedrich Struensee.
