Her literary talents were matched by her fervent commitment to social reform, particularly in the realm of women's rights. Norton's life took a dramatic turn in eighteen thirty-six when she left her husband, who was widely accused of coercive behavior, seeking to escape a tumultuous marriage.

The fallout from her departure was significant. Her husband initiated a scandalous lawsuit against her close friend, Lord Melbourne, the Whig Prime Minister, for criminal conversation, a charge implying adultery. Although the jury ultimately found Lord Melbourne not guilty, the case highlighted the injustices faced by women at the time. Despite her efforts, Norton was unable to secure a divorce and was denied access to her three sons, as the prevailing laws favored fathers in custody disputes.

Undeterred by her personal struggles, Caroline Norton became a passionate advocate for change. Her relentless campaigning played a crucial role in the passage of several important legislative reforms, including the Custody of Infants Act of eighteen thirty-nine, the Matrimonial Causes Act of eighteen fifty-seven, and the Married Women's Property Act of eighteen seventy.
