Carolyn Schuler

Carolyn Jane Schuler, born on January 5, 1943, emerged as a remarkable figure in American swimming, making her mark as a competition swimmer and Olympic champion. Known for her tenacity and skill, she achieved gold medals in both the 100-meter butterfly and the 4x100-meter medley at the 1960 Rome Olympics, solidifying her status as a world-class athlete.

Schuler's journey in competitive swimming began at the tender age of thirteen. Despite not being recognized as a standout competitor in her youth, she demonstrated her potential by contributing to the success of the Berkeley YMCA team. This team captured the national AAU medley championship, setting a new American record for the medley relay, showcasing her early promise in the sport.

In March 1958, Schuler was part of a medley relay team that triumphed at the National Jr. Girls championship, clocking in at four minutes and forty-four point eight seconds. Her prowess continued to shine as she helped set a national record in the 440-yard freestyle relay in July 1959, further establishing her reputation in the swimming community.

Her breakthrough moment came at the Far Western Swim Meet in San Francisco in late August 1959, where she set a world record in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of two minutes and thirty-eight point one seconds. This achievement garnered national attention and sparked speculation about her potential inclusion in the upcoming Olympic team.
