Carrie Nation

Carrie Nation, born on November twenty-fifth, eighteen forty-six, was a prominent agitator and writer known for her fierce advocacy of temperance. Originally named Carrie Moore, she became Carrie Gloyd after her first marriage in eighteen sixty-seven and later took on the name Carrie Nation following her marriage to David Nation in eighteen seventy-four. Her commitment to social reform earned her the affectionate title of 'Mother Nation' due to her extensive charity and religious work.

Nation believed that drunkenness was a root cause of many societal issues, which fueled her passion for helping those affected by alcohol. In eighteen ninety, she founded a sewing circle in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, dedicated to making clothing for the impoverished and providing meals during holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her efforts extended to the establishment of a shelter in Kansas City, Missouri, in nineteen oh-one, aimed at supporting wives and children of alcoholics. This shelter would later be recognized as a pioneering model for contemporary battered women's shelters.

In her autobiography, 'The Use and Need of the Life of Carry A. Nation,' published in nineteen oh-eight, she expressed her strong opposition to Freemasonry and voiced concerns about women's fashion, particularly the harmful effects of corsets on vital organs. Nation famously described herself as 'a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn't like,' reflecting her self-perceived divine mission to promote temperance through the destruction of bars.
