Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam, born Steven Demetre Georgiou on July 21, 1948, is a celebrated British musician and singer-songwriter, widely recognized by his stage names Cat Stevens and Yusuf/Cat Stevens. With a remarkable career that has seen him sell over one hundred million records and achieve more than two billion streams, his musical journey spans genres including folk, rock, pop, and Islamic music.

Stevens made his debut in 1967 with the album 'Matthew and Son,' which quickly climbed into the top ten of the UK charts. His subsequent albums, 'Tea for the Tillerman' and 'Teaser and the Firecat,' achieved triple platinum status in the United States. Notably, his 1972 album 'Catch Bull at Four' reached number one on the US Billboard 200, solidifying his place in music history. His songwriting prowess earned him ASCAP awards in 2005 and 2006 for the enduring hit 'The First Cut Is the Deepest.'

In December 1977, Stevens converted to Islam and adopted the name Yusuf Islam, marking a significant shift in his life and career. He released the album 'Izitso' shortly after his conversion and dedicated himself to educational and philanthropic efforts within the Muslim community. Despite stepping away from the music scene, he returned in 2006 with 'An Other Cup,' his first new pop album in nearly three decades, and began to re-embrace his musical roots.

His resurgence continued with the release of 'Roadsinger' in 2009 and 'Tell 'Em I'm Gone' in 2014, which marked his first US tour since 1978. In 2017, he celebrated his legacy by releasing 'The Laughing Apple' under the name Yusuf / Cat Stevens, and in 2020, he reimagined his classic album with 'Tea for the Tillerman 2.' Most recently, in June 2023, he unveiled 'King of a Land,' further showcasing his enduring talent and evolution as an artist.
