Catharina van Hemessen

Catharina van Hemessen, born in 1528, stands as a pioneering figure in the realm of Flemish Renaissance painting. Recognized as the earliest female Flemish painter with verifiable works, she carved a niche for herself in a male-dominated art world. Her oeuvre primarily consists of small-scale portraits of women, created between the late 1540s and early 1550s, alongside a selection of religious compositions.

One of her most notable achievements is the creation of the first self-portrait of an artist depicted at an easel. Completed in 1548 when she was just twenty years old, this self-portrait captures her in the act of painting, holding a maulstick. This significant work is housed in the Kunstmuseum Basel, showcasing her talent and innovative spirit.

Van Hemessen's paintings can also be found in prestigious institutions such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery in London. Despite the challenges faced by women artists during the early modern period, including limited access to artistic education and mentorship, she emerged as a skilled artist, having been trained by her father, Jan Sanders van Hemessen.
