Catherine Connolly

Catherine Connolly, born on July twelfth, nineteen fifty-seven, is a prominent Irish politician who has made significant strides in her career, culminating in her election as the president of Ireland on November eleventh, twenty twenty-five. A native of Galway, Connolly's political journey began with the Labour Party, where she was elected to the Galway City Council in nineteen ninety-nine and served as Mayor of Galway from two thousand four to two thousand five.

After leaving the Labour Party in two thousand six due to a dispute over candidate selection, Connolly faced challenges in her political career, including unsuccessful attempts to secure a seat in the general elections of two thousand seven and two thousand eleven as an independent candidate. However, her perseverance paid off when she was elected as a Teachta Dála for the Galway West constituency in two thousand sixteen. She made history as Ireland's first female Leas-Cheann Comhairle, serving in the thirty-third Dáil from July twenty twenty to November twenty twenty-four.

In the twenty twenty-five presidential election, Connolly ran as an independent candidate, garnering support from various political groups, including Sinn Féin and the Social Democrats. Her victory was historic, as she received nine hundred fourteen thousand one hundred forty-three first-preference votes, marking the largest personal mandate in the history of the Republic of Ireland. Connolly is the third woman to hold the presidency, following Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese.
