Catherine Eddowes

Catherine Eddowes, born on April fourteenth, eighteen forty-two, was a woman whose life was tragically cut short in the infamous Whitechapel district of London. Known primarily as a prostitute and farmworker, Eddowes became one of the five canonical victims of the notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper, whose gruesome acts shocked the nation in the late eighteen hundreds.

In the early hours of Sunday, September thirtieth, eighteen eighty-eight, Eddowes was murdered within the City of London. Her death occurred just an hour after the murder of Elizabeth Stride, marking a grim night that would later be referred to as the 'double event.' This term originated from the chilling 'Saucy Jacky' postcard sent to the Central News Agency on October first, which highlighted the killer's audacity.

The aftermath of Eddowes's murder included a disturbing letter addressed 'From Hell,' which was postmarked on October fifteenth and sent to George Lusk, the chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee. The letter claimed to contain a part of Eddowes's left kidney, which had been removed during the brutal attack. The author boasted of having fried and consumed the other half, although most experts dispute the authenticity of the kidney.
