Catherine I, Latin Empress

Catherine I, known as Catherine of Courtenay, was born on November twenty-fifth, one thousand two hundred seventy-four. She emerged as a significant political figure in the tumultuous landscape of the late thirteenth century, recognized as the Latin Empress of Constantinople from the year one thousand two hundred eighty-three until her death in one thousand three hundred seven.

Despite her title, Catherine's reign was marked by exile, as she primarily held authority over the Crusader States in Greece rather than the city of Constantinople itself. Her life was a testament to the complexities of power and identity during a time of great upheaval.

In the year one thousand three hundred one, Catherine married Charles of Valois, solidifying her political alliances. Together, they had four children: one son and three daughters. Among them, her eldest daughter, Catherine II, would go on to inherit her mother's title as titular empress, continuing the legacy of the Courtenay line.
