However, her life took a dramatic turn that would define her legacy. Smith's notoriety escalated in 1982 when she was implicated in the tragic death of actor John Belushi, having administered a lethal combination of heroin and cocaine.

Following this incident, Smith's life became a subject of public fascination. She was sentenced to fifteen months in the California Institution for Women, a period that allowed her to reflect on her tumultuous life.
