Caupo of Turaida

Caupo of Turaida, born in the year twelve hundred, emerged as a prominent leader among the Finnic-speaking Livonian people during the early thirteenth century. His influence extended across regions that are now part of Latvia and Estonia, situated by the Gulf of Riga. Often referred to as a 'King of Livonia', Caupo's status is highlighted in the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, which describes him as quasi rex, meaning 'like a king'.
