Cécile Manorohanta

Cécile Manorohanta, born in 1950, is a prominent Malagasy politician who has made significant strides in the political landscape of Madagascar. She has been serving as the Deputy Prime Minister for the Interior since September two thousand nine, a role that underscores her influence in the government. Prior to this, she held the esteemed position of Minister of Defense from October two thousand seven to February two thousand nine, becoming the first woman to occupy this role in her country.

Manorohanta's tenure as Minister of Defense began on twenty-seven October two thousand seven, under Prime Minister Charles Rabemananjara. Her groundbreaking appointment marked a pivotal moment in Madagascar's history, as she broke gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. However, her time in this position was not without challenges. On nine February two thousand nine, she announced her resignation in response to the tragic events of the Malagasy protests, where police violence resulted in the deaths of at least fifty protesters.

Following her resignation, Manorohanta was reappointed to the government by Transitional President Andry Rajoelina as Deputy Prime Minister for the Interior on eight September two thousand nine. This role allowed her to continue her public service and contribute to the governance of Madagascar during a tumultuous period.

In December two thousand nine, there was speculation about her potential appointment as Prime Minister after Rajoelina dismissed Eugene Mangalaza. However, the position ultimately went to Albert Camille Vital. Despite this, Manorohanta's political journey continued, and since two thousand thirteen, she has also taken on the role of president of the University of Antsiranana, further solidifying her commitment to education and leadership in Madagascar.
