Cecilia Beaux

Cecilia Beaux, born on May first, eighteen fifty-five, was a pioneering American painter renowned for her exquisite and sensitive portraits. As the first woman to teach art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, she made significant contributions to the art world, capturing the essence of her subjects, which included notable figures such as First Lady Edith Roosevelt, Admiral Sir David Beatty, and Georges Clemenceau.

Her artistic journey began in Philadelphia, where she honed her skills before moving to Paris. There, she was influenced by prominent academic artists like Tony Robert-Fleury and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, as well as the innovative works of Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas. Beaux's style drew comparisons to that of John Singer Sargent, with art critic Bernard Berenson humorously noting that her paintings were the best Sargents in the room.

Beaux's belief in the connection between physical characteristics and behavioral traits mirrored the teachings of her instructor, William Sartain. Her dedication to her craft did not go unnoticed; she was awarded a gold medal for lifetime achievement by the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Furthermore, Eleanor Roosevelt honored her as 'the American woman who had made the greatest contribution to the culture of the world,' solidifying her legacy in the arts.
