Cedric Maxwell, affectionately known as "Cornbread," is a former professional basketball player who has transitioned into a successful career in radio broadcasting. Born on November twenty-first, nineteen fifty-five, Maxwell made a significant impact in the National Basketball Association (NBA) during his eleven-season tenure, most notably with the Boston Celtics, where he played a pivotal role in securing two championships.
Maxwell's basketball journey began at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he led the 49ers to an NCAA Final Four appearance in nineteen seventy-seven. He was subsequently drafted by the Boston Celtics, where he initially came off the bench in his rookie year. However, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming the starting small forward for the nineteen seventy-eight to nineteen seventy-nine season, despite the team's struggles that year.
The arrival of Larry Bird in the following season marked a turning point for the Celtics, as they began their ascent to dominance in the eighties. In the nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-one season, Maxwell, alongside Bird, Robert Parish, and rookie Kevin McHale, helped the team clinch the NBA championship, earning himself the Finals MVP award in the process.
As his career progressed, Maxwell found himself in a competitive battle for the starting power forward position with McHale. This competition led to Maxwell's trade to the Los Angeles Clippers just before the nineteen eighty-five to nineteen eighty-six season. He played for a season and a half with the Clippers before finishing his career with the Houston Rockets, retiring after the nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen eighty-eight season with over ten thousand points to his name.
After hanging up his sneakers, Maxwell briefly coached the Long Island Surf in the United States Basketball League. He then embarked on a new chapter as a radio broadcaster, serving as the color commentator for Celtics radio broadcasts since two thousand one. In recognition of his contributions to the team, the Celtics retired his jersey number thirty-one in two thousand three.
