Celsus

Celsus, a prominent philosopher and writer of the second century, emerged as a significant figure in the intellectual landscape of his time. Renowned for his critical stance against early Christianity, he authored the notable work, The True Word, which stands as the earliest comprehensive critique of both Christianity and Judaism. His insights and arguments have been preserved primarily through the quotations found in Origen of Alexandria's refutation, Contra Celsum, written in the year two hundred forty-eight.

Scholars suggest that Celsus likely composed The True Word around the years one hundred seventy to one hundred eighty, possibly in response to the works of Justin Martyr, who is often regarded as the first Christian apologist. This timing places Celsus in the first half of the second century AD, a period marked by significant theological debates and the formation of early Christian doctrine.
