Cennino Cennini

Cennino Cennini, born in the year 1360 in Colle di Val d'Elsa, Tuscany, was an influential Italian painter and writer. He was a student of Agnolo Gaddi in Florence, who himself was trained by Taddeo Gaddi, a disciple of the renowned Giotto. Cennini's artistic journey led him to work at the court of Francesco Novello da Carrara in Padua for several years before he returned to his hometown.

He is best known for authoring 'Il libro dell'arte', a comprehensive guide on late Medieval and early Renaissance painting techniques. Although it was mistakenly believed to have been written in the year 1437, the book is actually much older, likely penned in the 1390s. It covers a wide array of topics, including pigments, brushes, panel painting, fresco techniques, and more, providing invaluable insights into the art of painting during that era.

Cennini's work also played a crucial role in dispelling myths surrounding the invention of oil painting, which was often attributed to Jan van Eyck. His references to oil painting, alongside those of Theophilus, were significant in challenging these misconceptions. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact dates of his life, it is clear that Cennini's contributions to the art world were profound and lasting.

In addition to technical advice, Cennini offered guidance on the lifestyle of a painter, emphasizing moderation in diet and the importance of preserving one's hands from strain.
