Cerdic of Wessex is a pivotal figure in the early history of England, recognized as the founder and first king of Wessex. His reign, which spanned from around five hundred nineteen to five hundred thirty-four AD, marked the beginning of a significant era in the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a key historical source, describes him as a leader of the Gewissae, a tribal group that played a crucial role in the formation of Wessex.
