Cesária Évora

Cesária Évora, born on August 27, 1941, was a celebrated Cape Verdean singer renowned for her soulful interpretations of morna, a traditional music genre from Cape Verde. Singing in her native Cape Verdean Creole, her songs often explored themes of love, nostalgia, and the rich history of her people. Évora was not only known for her powerful voice but also for her unique stage presence, often performing barefoot and indulging in smoking and drinking during intermissions.

Growing up in poverty, Évora began her musical journey at the tender age of sixteen, performing in local bars. Despite gaining some popularity in Cape Verde, she faced challenges that led her to retire from music, as it did not provide sufficient income to support her children. However, her passion for music reignited in 1985 when she contributed to a women's music anthology in Portugal, where she met influential music producer José "Djô" da Silva.

Signing with da Silva's record label, Lusafrica, Évora released her debut album, La Diva Aux Pieds Nus, in 1988. Her career took a significant turn with the release of her fourth and fifth albums, Miss Perfumado in 1992 and Cesária in 1995, which brought her international acclaim. Over the years, her music garnered numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award in 2004, and she became an inspiration for many artists, including Madonna.

Despite her success, Évora faced health challenges in the late 2000s, ultimately succumbing to respiratory failure and hypertension in 2011. Her legacy as the Barefoot Diva and the Queen of Morna continues to resonate, influencing generations of musicians and captivating audiences worldwide.
