Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ch'oe Yŏng

Ch'oe Yŏng, a distinguished military leader of the Goryeo period, was born in 1316 in either Hongseong or Cheorwon. His strategic prowess and leadership skills earned him a revered place in Korean history, particularly after he successfully quelled Cho Il-sin's Rebellion, a significant uprising that threatened the stability of the Goryeo dynasty.

In addition to his role in suppressing internal strife, Ch'oe Yŏng played a crucial part in the Red Turban Rebellions, showcasing his commitment to defending his homeland. His military acumen led him to forge an alliance with the Ming dynasty, a pivotal move aimed at dismantling the Mongol Yuan dynasty's grip on Korea.

Despite his numerous achievements and status as a national hero, Ch'oe Yŏng's life took a tragic turn in his later years. Betrayed by his former subordinate, Yi Sŏng-gye, he faced execution, marking a dramatic end to his storied career and contributing to the rise of the Joseon dynasty, which ultimately concluded the Goryeo period.
