Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Chaka Bey

Chaka Bey, known in Turkish as Çaka Bey, was a prominent military commander of Oghuz Turk origin during the 11th century. He established a vassal state of the Seljuks in Smyrna, which is present-day Izmir. Initially serving the Byzantine Empire, Chaka Bey's ambitions led him to rebel against his former masters, successfully seizing control of Smyrna and much of the Aegean coastlands of Asia Minor, along with the nearby islands between the years of 1088 and 1091.

At the height of his power, Chaka Bey audaciously declared himself the Byzantine Emperor, demonstrating his aspirations for dominance in the region. He even sought to launch an assault on Constantinople, collaborating with the Pechenegs to further his military objectives. However, his reign was not without challenges.

In 1092, Chaka Bey faced a significant setback when a Byzantine naval expedition led by Megadoux John Doukas inflicted a heavy defeat upon him, resulting in the retaking of Lesbos. This defeat marked a turning point in his military endeavors, leading to a decline in his power.

Tragically, Chaka Bey's life came to an end the following year when he was slain by his son-in-law, Kilij Arslan I, the Sultan of Rum. Following his death, Smyrna and the territories that had once belonged to Chaka Bey were reclaimed by the Byzantines around the year 1097, marking the end of his brief but impactful rule.
