Chang Yŏngsil

Chang Yŏngsil, born in the year fourteen hundred, emerged as a prominent figure during the Joseon dynasty of Korea. His unique background, being the son of a government-registered courtesan and a father of Yuan dynasty descent, shaped his early life. Despite being born a nobi, or slave, his exceptional talents caught the attention of King Sejong, who appointed him as a court technician in the royal court.

As an accomplished mechanical engineer, scientist, and inventor, Chang Yŏngsil made significant contributions to the technological landscape of his time. His innovative spirit led to the creation of remarkable instruments, including the ch'ŭgugi, a sophisticated rain gauge, and a water gauge, both of which exemplified the advancements in scientific instrumentation during the Joseon dynasty.

Chang's work not only reflected his ingenuity but also played a crucial role in the development of agricultural practices and water management in Korea. His inventions were instrumental in enhancing the understanding of meteorological phenomena, thereby aiding farmers in their efforts to cultivate the land effectively.
