Charles Avison

Charles Avison, born in February seventeen oh nine, was a prominent English composer whose work spanned the Baroque and Classical periods. His contributions to music were not only as a composer but also as a music critic, musicographer, organist, and educator, showcasing his multifaceted talent in the realm of music.

Throughout his career, Avison served as a church organist at St John The Baptist Church and St Nicholas's Church, which later became Newcastle Cathedral. His role in these institutions highlighted his deep commitment to the musical life of his community.

Among his most notable works are the twelve Concerti Grossi, which were inspired by the compositions of Scarlatti. Additionally, his Essay on Musical Expression holds the distinction of being the first music criticism published in English, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of music critique.
