The origins of the game can be traced back to The Landlord's Game, a creation of Elizabeth Magie, who patented it in nineteen oh four. Darrow encountered a modified version of this game, made significant alterations, and subsequently sold it to Parker Brothers. The company marketed him as the sole inventor, overshadowing Magie's foundational role in the game's development.
