Charles Eastman

Charles Eastman, born on February nineteenth, eighteen fifty-eight, was a remarkable American physician, writer, and social reformer. He is celebrated as one of the most prolific authors and speakers on Sioux ethnohistory and American Indian affairs during the early twentieth century. His unique background, being of Santee Dakota, English, and French descent, provided him with a rich cultural perspective that informed his work.

After earning his medical degree, Eastman dedicated his career to serving Native American communities, particularly on reservations in South Dakota. His experiences as a physician deepened his commitment to advocating for Native American rights and improving the lives of Indigenous youths. He was instrumental in founding thirty-two Native American chapters of the YMCA, which aimed to provide support and resources for young people.
