Charles Evans Hughes

He was the son of a Welsh immigrant preacher and his wife, and he pursued higher education at Brown University and Columbia Law School, eventually establishing a successful law practice in New York City.

Hughes's political career began with his election as the thirty-sixth governor of New York in nineteen oh six, where he implemented several progressive reforms. His reputation for integrity and reform led to his appointment as an associate justice of the Supreme Court by President William Howard Taft in nineteen ten, a position he held until nineteen sixteen. During his tenure, he often aligned with Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. to support state and federal regulations.

In nineteen sixteen, Hughes resigned from the Supreme Court to run for president as the Republican nominee, narrowly losing to incumbent Woodrow Wilson. Afterward, he served as the forty-fourth U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, where he played a crucial role in negotiating the Washington Naval Treaty, aimed at curbing naval armament among major powers.

In nineteen thirty, Hughes was appointed as the eleventh Chief Justice of the United States by President Herbert Hoover. His leadership on the bench was marked by pivotal decisions, including a significant shift in the court's stance on New Deal legislation in nineteen thirty-seven. He served until nineteen forty-one, leaving a lasting legacy in American jurisprudence.
