Charles Grandison Finney

Charles Grandison Finney, born on August twenty-ninth, seventeen ninety-three, was a prominent American Presbyterian minister and a pivotal figure in the Second Great Awakening. Often referred to as the 'Father of Old Revivalism,' Finney's influence extended far beyond the pulpit, as he became a leading voice for social reform during a transformative period in American history.

From eighteen twenty-five to eighteen thirty-five, Finney captivated audiences as a passionate revivalist preacher in the Burned-over District of Upstate New York and in Manhattan. His fervent opposition to Old School Presbyterian theology and his advocacy for Christian perfectionism marked him as a distinctive leader among the New School Presbyterians and the Holiness Movement.

Finney's religious convictions inspired him to champion various social causes, including abolitionism and equal education for women and African Americans. In eighteen thirty-five, he began teaching at Oberlin College in Ohio, an institution notable for its progressive stance on race and gender, accepting students without regard to these factors.

Finney served as the second president of Oberlin College from eighteen fifty-one to eighteen sixty-five, during which time he and the college community actively supported abolitionism, the Underground Railroad, and universal education. His legacy as a religious leader and reformer continues to resonate in discussions of faith and social justice.
