Charles I of Württemberg

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Charles I of Württemberg

Charles I of Württemberg, born on March sixth, eighteen twenty-three, was the third King of Württemberg, reigning from June twenty-fifth, eighteen sixty-four until his death in eighteen ninety-one. As the only son of King William I and Queen Pauline Therese, he ascended to the throne following his father's passing. His reign marked a significant shift towards liberalism, as he reinstated freedoms of the press and association in the same year he became king.

During his early reign, Charles faced the complexities of German unification, navigating the tensions between Austria and Prussia. Initially aligning with Austria during the Austro-Prussian War, he later shifted his support to Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War, ultimately joining the newly formed German Empire under Prussian influence in eighteen seventy.

In eighteen forty-six, Charles married Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia, but the couple remained childless, a situation attributed to Charles' homosexuality. In eighteen seventy, they adopted Olga's niece, Grand Duchess Vera Konstantinovna. As his reign progressed, Charles grew weary of his responsibilities and retreated into a more private life, becoming embroiled in various scandals related to his sexual orientation, including a notable relationship with American Charles Woodcock.

Upon his death, having no direct heirs, Charles was succeeded by his nephew, King William II, marking the end of his unique and tumultuous reign.
