The political landscape shifted dramatically following the Sicilian Vespers uprising against his father, which resulted in Sicily declaring independence under Peter III of Aragon in the year twelve eighty-two. In the subsequent year, Charles was entrusted with the regency of the mainland territories of the Regno, or Kingdom of Naples. His military endeavors culminated in a naval battle near Naples in the year twelve eighty-four, where he was captured by the Sicilian admiral Roger of Lauria. This defeat left him imprisoned at the time of his father's death on January seventh, twelve eighty-five, leading to a regency over his realms.
