Charles Jenkins Sr.

Charles Jenkins Sr., born on January seventh, nineteen thirty-four, is a celebrated former American athlete renowned for his remarkable achievements in track and field. He gained international fame as a two-time gold medalist at the 1956 Summer Olympics, where he showcased his extraordinary talent in the 400 meters and the 4 × 400 meters relay.

Under the guidance of coach Jumbo Elliott, Jenkins clinched the National AAU title in the 440 yards in nineteen fifty-five. Despite finishing third in the U.S. Trials, he persevered and made it to the Olympic final in Melbourne, where he delivered a stunning performance to secure the gold medal. Just days later, he added another gold to his collection as part of the victorious U.S. relay team.

Jenkins also excelled in indoor competitions, winning the AAU 600 yards title in nineteen fifty-five, nineteen fifty-seven, and nineteen fifty-eight. In nineteen fifty-six, he set a world indoor best for the 500 yards, further solidifying his status as a top-tier athlete. Following the passing of his coach in nineteen eighty-one, Jenkins took on the role of head coach at Villanova, where he mentored his son, Chip, who also became an Olympic gold medalist.

In his personal life, Jenkins married Phyllis Randolph in December nineteen fifty-six, though the marriage was annulled shortly after. He later married attorney Issie Shelton. In the nineteen seventies, he contributed to the U.S. Office of Education, demonstrating his commitment to education and mentorship beyond athletics.
